Of course the wonderful Google Earth and the brief route descriptions I’ve given in the blogs are no substitute for a detailed, accurate map (or, of course, the much more detailed directions of hikes given in my three books!) if actually visiting the more secluded or remote places in this blog, but, just for fun, I’ve marked the location of most of the scenic attractions and other landmarks described here on a series of Google Maps, together with a number of other wonderful places I’ve visited which may not yet have been blogged.  The amount of detail on some of the staellite photos is amazing, and hidden places such as the Huangdidian Bat Cave and Thosuand Foot Cliff in Nantou County can be clearly seen.

Of course this set of map links and the amount of info on them is constantly growing, and will hopefully cover the whole of Taiwan, in varying detail, one day! The links below are listed by county.  The relevent Google Map, centered on the specific area, can also be found at the bottom of each blog entry.

Hi and thanks for visiting!

I'm a musician (a pianist) and writer who's been living in Taiwan since 1993. This blog is a new attempt to document my travels all over Taiwan and the outlying islands. I have written five books (Taipei Day Trips I and II, Yangmingshan: the Guide, and Taipei Escapes I and II, with a sixth, a guide to Taiwan's offshore islands, on the way in 2012). Most of my post-April 2010 trips will hopefully appear here, along with some favorite past explorations, many of which are based on articles from a column I wrote (called 'Off the Beaten Track') for the China Post newspaper, here in Taiwan.
