Taipei Day Trips 1 and 2 were written in 1998 (with a second edition appearing in 2004) and 2003 respectively and between them described sixty day walks and day trips in northern Taiwan. The original plan was to revise both books for new editions in 2011, but instead I’ve produced two completely new books, Taipei Escapes I and II (out July 2011), combining some of the walks and day trips from the two orignal books (with many changes and improvements) with about twenty new walks and day trips. The new books are described in a different section of this website.

Hi I am visting Taipei last week of September and would like to join one of your hikes on Sat or Sun 2/3 Oct.

Could you let me know if you have anything arranged for either of those days?

    Thanks very much
    Ace

Thanks for writing, Ace! There’ll be a hike on Sunday 3rd October for sure, and the place etc. will be up on this site the week before. I’ll try remember to send details to your email adress as well, but in case I forget, please let me know (I’m giving a piano recital on October 2nd so I might not be as focused as usual the week before!). Hope to see you you on the 3rd!

Hi are you still doing a hike on Sun 3rd, if so, how long, where and what difficulty will it be? I am now in Taipei. Many thanks!

      Hi again Ace,
I’ve been holding on since the weather looks a bit unsettled (as you probably noticed!), after so much wonderful weather recently, but yes, there’ll be something on on Sunday. I’ll put up the details on the site in a moment!

    Dear Richard,

We are from The Netherlands and spend our holidays in december in Taiwan. We would like to do the Sandiaoling waterfall walk at 24-12-2010 (http://taiwandiscovery.wordpress.com/2010/09/10/the-valley-of-waterfalls-sandiaoling-waterfall-trail/). Do we need to have a good condition or can everyone do this trail?

Could you maybe send us this trail by e-mail or post? We leave The Netherlands at 20-12-2010. So we would like to have it before this date or can we buy it somewhere in Taoyuan or Taipei?

    Thanks a lot!

    Kind regards,

    Joey

      Hi Joey,
I sent you an email. By the way, this hike is fine for most kinds of weather, except after really heavy rain when the path floods! Have a great time!

Hi and thanks for visiting!

I'm a musician (a pianist) and writer who's been living in Taiwan since 1993. This blog is a new attempt to document my travels all over Taiwan and the outlying islands. I have written five books (Taipei Day Trips I and II, Yangmingshan: the Guide, and Taipei Escapes I and II, with a sixth, a guide to Taiwan's offshore islands, on the way in 2012). Most of my post-April 2010 trips will hopefully appear here, along with some favorite past explorations, many of which are based on articles from a column I wrote (called 'Off the Beaten Track') for the China Post newspaper, here in Taiwan.
