Yangmingshan: the Guide is a comprehensive guide to the  National Park to the north of Taipei City, Taiwan’s capital. The book is divided into two parts. The first describes the history, natural history, and geology of the area. Part two is divided into seven large sections, describing the National Park and its sights in detail, with forty-one walks of widely varying grade, from short, easy strolls to strenuous hikes through the National Park’s remote and rarely visited northern and north-eastern reaches.

The book comes complete with many maps and full details on reaching the park’s numerous attractions by public transport and by private vehicle.

    Hi Rhonda,
Thanks for writing! The book contains detailed directions for each of the walks included, and most also have a sketch map. In the past readers have often commented on how detailed the directions are, so I think you should be fine, especially as many paths on Yangmingshan are clearer than trails elsewhere in the countryside around Taipei. Most trails are very suiotable for dogs, although some feature a fair amount of up and down, which might tire lss energetic dogs out!
The book is available at the Community Services Center, if you go there, and at branches of Caves, Eslite and Page One bookstores (plus a few others) in Taipei city.
Hope you have a great stay!

PS. There may be a hike before March 20th, but it’ll probably be a strenuous

Hi and thanks for visiting!

I'm a musician (a pianist) and writer who's been living in Taiwan since 1993. This blog is a new attempt to document my travels all over Taiwan and the outlying islands. I have written five books (Taipei Day Trips I and II, Yangmingshan: the Guide, and Taipei Escapes I and II, with a sixth, a guide to Taiwan's offshore islands, on the way in 2012). Most of my post-April 2010 trips will hopefully appear here, along with some favorite past explorations, many of which are based on articles from a column I wrote (called 'Off the Beaten Track') for the China Post newspaper, here in Taiwan.
